Downtown Los Angeles

Downtown Los Angeles is one of the most iconic and historical parts of Los Angeles. Los Angeles began as El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora Reina de los Ángeles in 1781 when 11 families settled near the banks of the Río Porciúncula (now called Los Angeles River).

It was founded by Spanish Governor Felipe de Neve, who decided to create a town in the area after he received reports of 76 Americans living on this land. The 76 people were told to work on farms during the day and guard against attacks at night. This made it one of the oldest cities in California.

Now, there are over 41,322 residents in the downtown Los Angeles area. Downtown LA has also become a center for arts and culture since its beginnings as an independent city. Since then, it has hosted several significant events that have shaped the United States, including protests to abolish slavery before the Civil War, major labor strikes, and the Democratic National Convention.

Today, it is home to one of the largest financial districts in the country and includes several historic and iconic landmarks such as The Bradbury Building, Los Angeles City Hall (first designed by William Andrews Clark), and Olvera Street – one of the oldest streets in the city. It also houses two of the largest and most popular sports venues: The Staples Center and the Los Angeles Coliseum.

Downtown LA also includes several neighborhoods, which each have its own unique features, such as Little Tokyo, Chinatown, and Boyle Heights (the oldest working-class neighborhood in LA). Visitors to Downtown LA will find a variety of activities that include: shopping, historical monuments, museums, art galleries, restaurants, theatres, and so much more.

Downtown LA also includes several other important landmarks, including Pershing Square, Grand Park, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Millenium Biltmore Hotel Los Angeles, Los Angeles City Hall, and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

Downtown LA is also host to many annual celebrations which celebrate the rich culture of this region. Some notable examples include Grand Performances, Noche de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), Dia de Los Angeles (Los Angeles Day), A Taste of Chinatown, Sunset Concerts at the Pier, and the Fiesta Broadway.

Downtown Los Angeles is a center for arts and culture that includes many iconic and historical landmarks, not to mention one of the most famous skylines in the country. From restaurants and bars to annual festivals celebrating rich traditions, this historical neighborhood will delight all who visit.
