North Hollywood
North Hollywood is a district of Los Angeles. It is bounded on all sides by the city of Burbank, California; Glendale, California; and Studio City, California. North Hollywood was first used as a film name in 1923 and has since become famous as the primary home to movie and television production companies for much of the 20th century.
This has led to a renaissance in the film industry, which is now experiencing tremendous growth. While some of this is due to North Hollywood’s ease of access to major film markets such as New York and Chicago via its own mass transit system, it mostly stems from the creativity that exists in North Hollywood itself. This community of talented people makes for an environment that is ripe for success.
The community has a population of about 73,571 residents as of 2020, with a median age of 35.7 years old. It is considered to be both the birthplace and current home base of popular culture as well as being one of the most ethnically diverse places in Los Angeles proper. In fact, it is estimated that over 90 languages are spoken in the area, representing 119 countries of origin.
North Hollywood also houses one of the biggest and most prolific film and television production locations in the world, with over 400 major media and entertainment companies working out of its ten square mile radius.
The area began as a small farming community centered on the intersection of Lankershim Boulevard and Erwin Street in 1870. It developed into an independent municipality named Toluca in 1912 before being subdivided and merged with the city of Los Angeles in 1915. North Hollywood was established in 1927 and today is a thriving community that has been given the nickname “NoHo” by local residents.
North Hollywood has been home to many important people from around the world, including glamorous movie stars such as Rudolph Valentino, Douglas Fairbanks Sr., Clark Gable, Cary Grant, Ginger Rogers, Gloria Swanson, and Marilyn Monroe, as well as literary figures such as Ayn Rand and F. Scott Fitzgerald.
North Hollywood is also known for hosting two major annual events: The North Hollywood Shootout and the North Hollywood Halloween Carnaval. Both bring crowds into the community and help establish it as a high-profile. For an iconic neighborhood in Los Angeles, check out Downtown Los Angeles.
